Welcome to these pages where you will find information about my first
steps into 4 metre operation.  At the moment it mainly comprises of the antenna!

4 metres (70MHz) appears to exhibit many of the same characteristics of the 2M (144MHz) and 6m (50MHz) bands.  In the short time of looking at this band I have discovered that the band is affected by tropospheric lifts and temperature inversions but seemingly at a lesser extent than 2m.  I have experienced Sporadic E enhancements and now that many other countries have access to the band it is fun on a band that it much less crowded than 6m. Sporadic events can be prolonged and very strong. Under normal conditions I have found the band to be slightly awkward to use with deep fading at times, distances at this station appear to range from a nominal 100 miles to 300 under normal conditions.

All modes are used on the band and although there currently is no space communications there is a very good opportunity to work meteor scatter.

At the present moment the band in the UK band allows a maximum power level of 22DBw (approx 160w) and the band edges are 70.000MHz to 70.500MHz.  More information is given in the band plan which may be clicked on from the link.
